Smudging: What is it and how do I go about it?

Many modern belief systems have incorporated Smudging. It is frequently used in rituals. Also as an accompaniment to meditation. A smudging ceremony is considered to be spiritually and psychologically cleansing. Especially, as it clears away negative energy.

A whole article could be written about its history and the various ways it has been used through the ages. Along with this could go many descriptions of the various intricacies of its practice. But simply put, smudging is based on age-old shamanic traditions. Smudging will cleanse, purify and protect, as well as to create peace and harmony. Also to banish negative energies with the smoke created from the burning of various herbs. One of the most popular and commonly used is White Sage.

Smudging may be done by using a smudge stick. (Made of herbs like white sage tied into a stick-shaped bundle for easy handling). Or by burning loose leaf in a fireproof container like a shell or a ceramic dish.

When using a dish or shell it is a good idea to put some sand or dirt in the bottom to insulate from the heat. This makes it comfortable and safe to use.

Smudging yourself.

Smudging yourself regularly can be a very practical way of keeping yourself in a balanced and peaceful state. It is particularly useful if you have been around people who are ill, depressed, fearful, angry, or emotionally upset. Smudging is also good when you’re feeling blue or depressed, or when you’ve been under a lot of stress.

Smudging yourself is easy. If you’re using a smudge stick, light the end of the smudge stick on a candle flame, or with an extended lighter. Hold the stick over the flame until there is a lot of smoke and the stick is burning well. This is safer than a match, as it can take a while to get the stick really smoking). Gently waft the smoke around your body. Or you can use a feather or your hand to gently fan the smoke over your body. You can start at the top of the body, moving downward, or bottom to top, or whatever way you are comfortable with. Get the back of your body as best you can and if you can, do the bottom of your feet.

If you’re using a smudge bowl or shell with loose leaf, light them using an extended bbq or stove lighter until it is smoking well. Then pass it around your body, bathing in the smoke. People usually feel more relaxed, lighter and brighter after smudging.

Smudging can be an everyday event. It can purify and cleanse your body, office, or home and rid them of negative energies. While you are at it, you can also cleanse your crystals or any other items you may have.

As in all of these activities, your intention plays an essential role also. Your intention is actually as important as the ritual itself and the actual constituents of the smudge.
