Stone of the Month – Obsidian

Black Obsidian is said to get its name from the discourse of Natural History written by the elder Pliny of Rome in reference to a volcanic glass called Obsian. It is a naturally occurring volcanic glass that is formed when molten lava comes into contact with water forcing it to cool quickly, resulting in an amorphous (lacking an inner structure) stone with a glossy, glassy texture.

Black Obsidian is a distinctive stone and is sometimes classified as a mineraloid with high silica content and its dark colour caused by its iron and magnesium content. It has a Mohs hardness of 5.5 and is a translucent, siliceous glassy stone with a vitreous lustre.

Black Obsidian has been revered since ancient times and was one of the foremost barter materials. Prized for its ability to produce razor-sharp edges it has been used since prehistoric times for making cutting and piercing tools, including axes, arrows and spears for hunting and as weapons. It has long been used for making decorative objects and jewellery and polished to make Black Obsidian mirrors and crystal balls.

In the Middle Ages Black Obsidian was alleged to drive out demons. At times it is referred to as the “Wizard’s Stone” as it is reputed to open the gateway into the netherworld, while providing protection from negativity and mischievous or harmful spirits.

Black Obsidian has been used in ritual circumcisions because of its sharpness and has been used in various cultures for deep healing purposes.

Black Obsidian has an aura of unqualified mystery and an energy that deeply draws you in, making it a very potent stone in lots of ways. Its powerful alchemy can generate significant transformation.

Black Obsidian has a sharpness that metaphysically cuts through matter to quickly reveal the truth; exposing blockages, illusions, lies, anxious facades, etc. It can reveal negative emotions and unpleasant truths. As it is a very powerful and fast acting stone it should be used with caution and respect.

Black Obsidian is referred to as the “Stone of Truth” and is considered to be a most significant spiritual teacher. Since it is without boundaries or limitations, nothing can be hidden when working with it.

Black Obsidian reflects your true self back from its shiny surface, so you must be prepared to face both the positive and negative sides of reality as it emerges. Upon having confronted and dealt with these issues, a great inner peace ensues. Some people find its effects too overwhelming and prefer to use a gentler stone.

The blackness of this stone allows easier access to the subconscious. It is used as a vision stone during vision quests and prophetic dreaming. In shamanic travelling its black colour provides protective energies and as black is the absence of light, it can be used to create invisibility.

Black Obsidian is a highly protective stone on all levels. It can form a shield against any negativity and will absorb negative energies from your environment. Because of this it needs to be cleansed regularly in running water.

Black Obsidian powerfully grounds and centres spiritual energy into the physical plane. It is a creative stone that connects the mind and emotions. Self-control and resilience is improved with the use of this stone. It impels personal growth and provides support. Black Obsidian is a helpful catalyst for change, especially for those who are unable or unwilling to let go of the past. It can also help to build razor-sharp mental abilities and powers of discernment. It can be very supportive for those who react emotionally to people and events in their life.

Black Obsidian reminds us that the cycle of birth and death is continuous and always present and as one. This stone has long been associated with the guardian spirits that are said to watch over us.

Black Obsidian is used in healing to help you become more grounded, focused and clear in all practical affairs. It provides insight and a unique opportunity to clarify the causes of dis-ease and/or emotional upset. It helps to protect the very sensitive from depression and is especially supportive in times of grief. It protects against negativity and hostility and is also very good at dealing with phobias, and is beneficial for treating shock.
